KAM - I know where you're
coming from, regarding Willow and
Tara, and neither of us is going to
change the other persons opinion
regarding their point of view, but
re-watching eps, thanks to re-runs, i do
not see the same things you see.

To me, Willow and Tara started out
innocently enough, even in hidsight, i
cannot see Tara heaping unwarranted
praise on Willow. In Hush, W/T were
trapped in the laundry room, Willow, to
SAVE their lives from the Gentlemen,
tries (unsuccessfully) to move a pop
machine to block the door. Only when
Tara offers her a hand do they move
the machine - their combined strength
does it. You said: Tara showered
praise on her, and it seemed pretty
clear that Willow was NOT more
powerful, and certainly not as
knowledgable about magic as Tara
was.
However, later, Tara tells
Willow she (Willow) is like Tara's mom
- very powerful. I think Willow's
strength isn't just magical, it was also
her self-esteem and self-worth, based
on not only how Buffy (and the others)
saw her, but on herself, some "inner"
strength.

Remember in "The Freshmen", Willow
and Buffy walking through campus, it
was Willow who felt at home there, it
was Willow who was self-assured and
confident.

I don't think Tara "worshiped" Willow,
did Tara "look up" to Willow? Probably.
Tara was shy and insecure with being
herself, but through loving Willow, Tara
grew stonger, more at ease with who
she was, Tara gained a confidant
whom she could confide in and share
thoughts and feelings with. i can't put
my finger on an exact moment, but as i
watch those eps again, i still see it
between them, that growing strong
together and to me it is a positive thing,
not negative.

I never saw W/T as an unhealthy ship,
or as one-sided as you see it. And i
know i'm not alone, many other
fans/websites see the same thing as i
did, a beautiful relationship that had its
share of problems, but both partners
were trying to work it out, sometimes
unsuccessfully or not as neat and tidy
as we'd like, but trying just the same.

Two last quotes from the show:
Willow: (from 2 to Go)- "The only thing
going for me -were those moments - just moments -
when Tara would look at me and I was wonderful."

And from "Hush":

WILLOW
You were there looking for me?

TARA
(nods)
I thought m-m-maybe we could
do a spell... make people talk
again. I'd seen you... in the
group, the w-w-wicca group.
You were... different than them.
They didn't seem to know...

WILLOW
What they were talking about?

Tara smiles shyly: exactly.

TARA
I think if they saw a w-w-witch
they would... run away.

WILLOW
Yeah. So how long have
you been practicing?

TARA
Always. I mean, since I was little...
My mom used to... she had a lot of
power. Like you.

WILLOW
Oh, I'm not -- I don't have
much in the way of power,
really, I mean most of my
potions come out... soup.
Also spells going awry,
friends in danger --
I'm definitely nothing special.

TARA
No, you are.

She looks Willow in the eye as she
says it. She means it. A moment, and
she looks away again, embarrassed by
her forwardness.

WILLOW
Well, I thought we made
a pretty good team --
not getting killed at all....
with some soda machine, boom!
Pretty cool. Seems like you're
kinda powerful.

TARA
I'd like to be. I feel like
I'm stuck. Like I'm at the
door and it won't open.

WILLOW
I know exactly what you mean.

The two share a sweet look -- the
beginning of a real connection.

Gotta go, but i'll be back tomorrow to
check for your comments...

Jocasta - You really do like Xander, don’t you? I’m thinking you see him as being a tender romantic lover, a bodice-ripping ravishing beast, and the faithful reliable long-haul husband all in one package.

Just to explain...whatever... I wasn’t saying that married sex is mundane, although I think most people on the board would know what I meant, and not be offended. I’m married myself. I was playing off the post (I thought it was yours but I guess I was wrong, too tired to check) about Xander being old dependable husband material which led me to picture a certain stereotype. I’d apologize but the thought of apologizing for offending Baters by implying that married sex can possibly be mundane has just caused the last of my brain to melt, drip onto the floor, and get mopped up by slayerdaddy’s scampering Speedos. So instead I'll say :p

No, I was saying that someone who’s into S/M being in a relationship with someone who’s not is a bad idea. We’ve all known or heard of RL people with bizarro sexual tastes who tried to adapt to a normal relationship. The lucky ones have bad endings, the unlucky ones have tragic endings. I think the S/M theme has been hinted at in all of Buffy’s relationships (e.g. the inter cutting with the killing in her first sex scene with Riley). You think not. End of the S/M discussion.

I will still object that the poor woman would have to make a lot of adaptations to her sexual behavior if she’s to be paired with Xander. She’s never indicated that she loves him./No matter, in enough years, she’ll grow to. She likes rough stuff./No, that was bad sick Spike, she really wants the sweet stuff like a proper girl. She’s physically stronger and can't even hug Xander without hurting him./No, she can suppress her passions.

Just one last thing and then you can have the floor and tell me I’m unromantic, and that’s Anya’s comment about him being a Viking in the sack. She loved him and it was all very sweet but I’d take it with a very large grain of salt, it doesn’t mean he’s in Buffy’s league. At the time Anya was human. The spanking, the ‘shiver me timbers’ dress-up-age role-playing, and whatever else, had the Saturday night suburban flavor to it that’s a far cry from the things Buffy got up to, whether with Angel, Riley, or Spike. Plus, I think Xander was created to be ordinary guy, not superhero, or super-powered anything.

I do know better than to question ‘shippers of any kind, so I’ll go away quietly now.

Safarigirl: We were thinking of a game more like your second example. It will be much like Artie's Fantasy Survivor game. There are questions based on what will happen in that week's ep. So example questions may be "How many vamps will Buffy stake this ep?" or "Will Dawn throw a tantrum?" or "Will Anya mention a Bunny?" then the players get points based on how many questions they get right. We are still working out all of the details but at this point we are just gauging interest. :)

Sad News about Frodo

I am sorry to announce that Frodo has died. His body was found on Monday. His friend Alan identified it today.

Those of you that posted with him will miss his wit, intelligence and rapier like mind for spotting inconsistencies in plot, set or direction.

He loved the show and loved to Bronze.

He had a way of arguing a point that retained good humor even when he got exasperated at the inability of the other poster to see his point of view.

Jocasta: Because I am always right, I can recognize those who are likewise always right. If we every disagree there will be two rights.

Frodo (March 26th 2002)

I miss him.... and intend to leave his name in my SO as a tribute.

Those of you who actually used to meet up with him might want to talk to Alan. E-mail me and I'll pass on details as I get them.

If I am speculating on events yet to happen based soley on previously aired eps, then I don't think I have to label it a spoiler. And, you know, I won't. If my speculation is BASED on spoilers, conformed or not, then, as was the case in the WB Bronze, I'd likely do this:

Tantra: literally 'thread' denotes the knowledge by which the yantra (or mechanism of Enlightenment) is to be worked/used/utilised.
Also the generic name for the Shakti Agamas (sectarian scriptures).
Busman's holiday!

Jocasta -

You said (well, lots of stuff - I'll get back to you on 'deserving the soul') but...What is your problem with Buffy? I like the conflict in her.... I don't want her to use her powers like a man.... she is a woman. Feminism is NOT emulating men its doing things in a woman's own way!

Conflict is all very well but she needs to admit she is conflicted and get some HELP instead of keeping on applying the 'Epiphany' band-aids until the next boy-friend or misfortune to a pal triggers exactly the same dichotomy (Norma/Slayer) in her all over agin (nod to Reyna).
The thing about power IMO (and my opinion comes from what Jung says about it incidentally) is that men have had thousands of years to wield it, they are schooled in it and, although of course they often **** it up, it is a specific part of their unconscious. For this reason, if a man has to exercise his 'feminine side' such as compassion, gentleness or tenderness he often surpasses a woman in that expression - because he uses it more infrequently. I mean I'm sure you know, as a woman, that a man's sweetness is just sooo precious, especially to children!

Similarly, women have not been used to being in the front-line of life outside the home/fighting/competeing etc. (due to historical reasons), and so when she has to use that power (her masculine side) she can be 'far more deadly than the male' because it is held in reserve so to speak.
The problem occurs when the feminine side of a bloke and the masculine side of a woman has to be wielded continuously - then it starts to dominate and usually with disasterous consequences (look at Maggie Thatcher!) Jung said that men in that situation become weak and easily dominated. That's the theory anyway, I think it's interesting given the struggle of men and women to redefine our roles especially since WW2; I'm not saying they can't be redefined but that this conditioning wasn't built in a day.

I agree with you that feminism should mean that women find their own way to express themselves and wield equal power in whatever strata of society - unfortunately I don't think Buffy is any sort of a model for this. She's a disaster area - of course so much more because of the type of power she has - but she simply does not know how to BE powerful. She's either guilty about it, or it makes her hard and lacking in discrimaination IMO. She has not really assumed that position of a slayer, assumed it as part of her being; instead she wears it like an uncomfortable piece of clothing that she wants to take off. Some sympathy should be due there perhaps, because she was 'called' and didn't choose the job, although...it could be karma, in that she 'deserved' it as the fruit of previous lives! *g*

Hello again,

Safarigirl: I have the sneaky suspicion I forgot to answer something you said the other day...

Miko: Well, I hear what you are saying, but I think Willow's actions were wholly selfish, and potentially very harmful. Not only that--violating the sanctity of a person's memory is an EXTREMELY serious violation in my way of thinking.
I think Willow's actions didn't take into account Tara's feelings, needs, or personal privacy in the slightest, and as such was an act wholly unworthy of a member of a relationship.
I don't think it is a matter of diabolical or innocent, but rather one of consideration. Willow had ZERO consideration for Tara in this. This type of violation in my view is completely irreconcilable with love.

I am afraid I have to disagree with your assessment of the initial interaction between Tara and Willow. Tara showered praise on her, and it seemed pretty clear that Willow was NOT more powerful, and certainly not as knowledgable about magic as Tara was. This seemed like unwarranted praise, which bordered on being creepy.

I have a few questions? You said I don't know, but Willow's strength certainly brought
mucho goodness out of Tara and gave Tara strength in return. Sounds pretty healthy to me, at least initially.

What "strength" are you referring to that Willow has? My this time I think that any strength Willow once had was pretty much gone, and her entire self image depended on others--naturally Tara's near-worship of her was something Willow greatly desired. What mucho goodness came because of this? And what strength did Tara get with Willow? The only hint of strength she really showed was when she overcame her fascination with Willow, and told her like it is. Oddly enough, upon her return, she almost immediately betrays a confidence that Buffy shared with her.

My base point--a relationship that is so one-sided isn't a healthy one. Add in the actual harmful actions on Willow's part, and it doesn't even come close. My opinion.

SPOILER TOPIC: I haven't really paid too much attention, but despite anything anyone has said--I think the point is this. We are inbetween seasons. What else COULD a spoiler at this point be other than for a future episode? It seems like a pretty safe assumption that it MUST be about the future, else it wouldn't be a spoiler.

Immortal: I'm firmly with Leather Jacket, paks, nails and Kansas on this one. Simple labels - containing either episode title and/or season and episode number; or 'Future spoilers' are a common courtesey and have pretty much become the prevailing method at the Beta.

I do agree with you that speculation (that is spoiler-free) should not have to be put in black font. I think it discourages conversation to hide these discussions. However, if a spoiled poster (such is often the case for me) is doing the speculating - the spec should be in black font and well marked as to whether or not actual spoilers are included in the spec. For example, I'm spoiled on a point about Spike right now. If I am speculating about Willow's fate, and Spike doesn't play into it - there's no harm there. If Spike were to play into Willow's fate (erm...I'm making this all up - I have no idea) - well then my spec. label should make it clear I am a tainted speculator. (e.g. - Speculation on Willow based on spoilers for Spike in S7)

Most of us who do read spoilers, will label our speculation to let the really pristine, like abt know whether it's safe for them to read or not. Your method requires a lot of guessing and is really more suited to a private discussion - or perhaps to a threaded board, where the thread itself can have guidelines on what's allowable. This is a quasi-public board, and a linear board to boot, so the things we post here are available to all. Putting unmarked future spoilers in spoiler font because you know your intended recipient's opinion on reading spoilers, excludes everyone else. If something is for KAM's eyes only, why not email him? If it's for KAM but you think it's contains at least a drop of substance that might entertain/interest/enrage other posters, that's the stuff you put on a board. And taking 5 seconds to label it is only common courtesey.

I'd rather take the extra seconds to label stuff, than to lose one spoiler-averse poster from the Beta. Wouldn't you? And if push came to shove, I'm much rather lose someone who wouldn't bother to label stuff, than someone who simply wants to be surprised. I'm not telling you what to do, but I am telling you I think the approach you've detailed is unfriendly and unwelcoming to those posters who want to learn the plot when they watch the actual show.

/spoiler ho - but I've had all my shots

KAM - Not blowing you off, i
swear! *G*

I've read some of your posts regarding
Willow this season, so i know where
you're coming from on that point of
view, so the only comment i'll make is
on this - you said,

"As far as W/T...well,
I wouldn't exactly categorize that as a
healthy relationship either. It involves
abuse, refusal to deal with the issues
surrounding that abuse, as well as an
inability to really be honest with each
other (basically due to Willow's
issues), and finally it was a relationship
from day one that had one partner
(Willow) in a superior position to the
other"

I think the "abuse" postion is a
teeny bit harsh - Willow was terribly
misguided and selfish in manipulating
Tara's mind for her own peace of mind
(ending the fight between them both)
but to me abuse is more a "deliberate
and wanton" act against someone,
knowing it will cause them harm.

That's not an excuse for Willow's actions, but i
think her reasons were a little more
innocent and not so diabolical towards
Tara. Besides, Tara DID leave Willow,
till Willow could come to her senses.
Being in love isn't easy (duh!) and i
think the W/T relationship showed that
to be the case with them.

I also think the honesty did come out, later and not
sooner, but, again the theme for this
season was "Oh, Grow Up!" and i must
say that for Willow to grow, she
needed to go down that path, as harsh
as it was.

Finally, the "superior position" you stated, well, Tara was
initially attracted to Willow in the Wicca
group because Willow wanted to
explore and experiment with magic, in
fact, in "Hush", Tara went looking for
Willow specifically because Willow
was into magic, Tara also said she
liked the fact that Willow was so strong
in magic-stuff, is that Willow being
"superior" to Tara? I don't know, but
Willow's strength certainly brought
mucho goodness out of Tara and gave
Tara strength in return. Sounds pretty
healthy to me, at least initially.

*sigh* i miss Tara...

1) Lolly? Choc? Cotton candy?

Watermelon.

2) What was the last thing you wanted to buy but knew it was just not you?

A gorgeous flowered cotton sundress that I saw in the Bay. It was too young for me.

3) What's the most unbelievably unfeasible (sp?) plot in movie history?

Any of the Austin Powers movies - but then, they're not meant to be believeable. For movies that are supposed to be believeable but aren't, I'd have to say Pearl Harbour takes the cake. Not the part about the war, but the parts about what happens to Ben Affleck's character - it just isn't possible.

4) Qoute a random song lyric that pops into your head.

Well you know/just what you do to me/the way you move/soft and slippery/Cut the night/just like a razor/girl you stop/ and that's the danger ... But can you tell me the song and the band? *g*

5) Have you ever read an interesting reference book? cos they all seem pretty boring to me... *g*

Yup, the CSP Reference of Physics and Chemistry produces electrifying reactions in it's readers. :)

LittleFearDemon Actually, I saw a rumour that Amber would be coming back as a staff writer for BTVS. She's apparently written a Willow/Tara comic already, so no reason why she couldn't do the job...I think it would be cool to have someone who's played one of the characters write an ep or two - different perspective.

No one's answered my "Fantasy Buffy" question yet, I see. I still don't know what exactly it was that I voted for...

nails- You actually proved my point. I'm friends with KAM. I know he doesn't mind spoilers. Regardless, it's addressed directly to him. It's in spoiler text which by nature suggest it contains spoilers. You were unsure and did not highlight. That's the best way to handle it. Now if KAM read my post and did not want to be spoiled, he'd have every right to be upset. I directed his attention there.

And for the record I don't think things of a speculative nature should be spoiler texted but I do it as a common courtesy.

paks- Not going to argue the fact that it smart to label your spoilers even if the only reason is that you limit the people willing to read your post if you don't and that assuming you're posting because you want to engage in a dialog that would achieve the opposite effect.

But I have to reitterate. It's the middle of the summer. News is leaking out left and right. Use common sense and don't read unlabeled spoilers.

To sum- it's in the poster's best interest to label their spoilers as to best ensure a dialog with as many perspective people as possible. Readers should not read unlabeled spoilers because it's better to be safe than sorry and they should be upset with no one but themselves if they do.

Butting in on the spoiler fonting topic.

IMMORTAL, Kansas, et al I think it is only common sense that the spoiler be labeled as clearly as possible. IMMORTAL is right, generally when folks are talking about Buffy on a day after a new ep has aired, it can be assumed that it is about the new ep. But discussing future events is different. Much of it is based purely on the posters own speculations and what they want to happen. Sometimes that is based on spoilers read at other sites, or interviews read at reputable sites as well. Personally, I think it only common courtesy to take that extra couple of seconds to be more detailed in labelling one's post. I am a bit anal rententive that way *g*. However, it is not a requirement of this site. Bascially those that wish to remain unspoiled like myself, since I will have UPN when the new season starts and I can watch the episode live (as it were) instead of relying on the wonderful newt (*smooooTch* HI NEWT) to tape it and mail it to me. will quite likely scroll past some posts. It would be a shame, to miss some wonderfully creative speculative discussion, because one wishes to remain unspoiled.

I am in no way trying to tell anyone how or what to post. I just wanted to add my two cents.

/two cents

Leather Jacket Yes I suppose you're right about as long as they keep all the Buffy lore in right. But I don't think that Joss would ever let them make a movie if he didn't have a helluva lot more control than he did in the original.

genrefan Oh I hadn't thought of that, Faith the Movie, I would liike to see more about her past and how she ended up on her own in Sunnydale. That way we could have the main characters, but they wouldn't have to botch up any arcs.

I can hear the pitter patter of tiny feet...........guess the dog's in the house again. And she's hungry.

I've also decided that kids are evil. I still can't help but feel intimidated when I have to walk past a big group of them, no matter how old they are.

Kansas- Actually it's traditional to incorporate a witty saying with your spoiler label. ex. "I can't believe it's not SPOILERS."

Otherwise, how can other posters know what to highlight and what not to? I say common sense. During the season posts labeled spoilers on a Wed would suggest they are talking about the previous night's ep. On July 17th what could possibly be in spoiler text other than something that pertains to the upcoming season?

In addition, if you check the FAQ it is not required that spoilers be categorized.

If someone is THAT dedicated to remaining unspoiled, what in the blue hell are they reading unlabeled spoilers? You should be upset with yourself for highlighting the text not for someone else for not categorizing the spoiler.

Sure it's a common courtesy to label a spoiler but by the same token I won't get upset if someone doesn't.

Oh gosh! I am sorry if I worried anyone!! Dr Mr OzLady is *fine!* You all are so sweet for worrying but believe me, if he weren't I wouldn't spend time posting! :-) Basic story is he was rear-ended at a stop light at about 1:30 AM, coming home from work. Guy was from TX, driving a rental and admitted he'd had a couple of drinks. Sigh... did my naive husband call the cops? No, because (and this is a quote), "I didn't smell alcohol on him, so I figured he was okay." *rolls eyes only semi-indulgantly* Of course, the guy called this AM to make sure Dr Mr OzLady was still okay AND to make sure we had his info. correct, but still... anyway, we went to the appraiser who said they'd get back to us and then they will either work on the car or pay us and we will get a new one. The sad thing is that Dr Mr OzLady really only needs a "crap car" to drive to work (he works at a clinic in a not-so-nice area) and to cart the kids around locally; for anything more than that, we use Ruffy (my car, not RTBS the poster after which it is named!). SO, having to get a new car now would NOT be a good thing as this one would have been paid off this November after 5 years. Sigh... well, at least Dr Mr OzLady is okay.

I hated "Restless" when it first aired, but the more times I watched it, the more I liked it, and now it's one of my favorites. IMMORTAL There's a difference between information on what will happen in future shows and speculation as to what might happen based on what has already aired. I'm trying to avoid the former, but would be interested in reading the latter. People tend to spoiler-font both of them (although I'm not sure speculation really warrants it). So, for example, I feel safe reading abt's speculative posts, but I'm not going to highlight what you wrote to KAM because I don't know whether it contains something that happens in the new season.

Hello again,

abt: Well, it is hard to say what MIGHT have happened, but it is a possibility. It is also a possibility that she wouldn't have delved into self-hatred, and would have realized what she finally did in the end--that there WAS something to live for--even if it was only for Dawn. Running to hide from her problems with Spike certainly delayed the more positive place she arrived at.

Now, how LIKELY is her being dead if not going to Spike? I see nothing that indicated she was trying to kill herself (she did, and Dawn convinced her otherwise) again.

It's midweek, so here are a couple of light hearted attempts at humour to get you through until the end of the week

1. An attractive blonde lady calls 911, late one night, on her cell
phone to report that her car has been broken into.

She is hysterical as she explains her situation to the dispatcher. "They've stolen the stereo, the steering wheel, the brake pedal and even the accelerator!" she cried.

The dispatcher says, "Stay calm. An officer has been dispatched and is on the way."

A few minutes later, the officer radios in "Disregard."

"She got in the back seat by mistake."

2. In the hospital the relatives gathered in the waiting room, where their family member lay gravely ill. Finally, the doctor came in looking tired and sombre.

"I'm afraid I'm the bearer of bad news," he said as he surveyed the worried faces. "The only hope left for your loved one at this time is a brain transplant. It's an experimental procedure, semi-risky and you will have to pay for the brain yourselves."

The family members sat silent as they absorbed the news.
After a great length of time, someone asked, "Well, how much does a brain cost?"

The doctor quickly responded, "$5,000 for a male brain and $200 for a female brain."

The moment turned awkward. Men in the room tried not to smile, avoiding eye contact with the women, but some actually smirked. A man, unable to control his curiosity, blurted out the question everyone wanted to ask, "Why is the male brain so much more?"

The doctor smiled at the childish innocence and so to the entire group he said, "It's just standard pricing procedure. We have to mark down the price of the female brains, because they've actually been used." grrrrrr

Leather Jacket- We have to categorize spoilers now??? "... to show those of us who want to remain unspoiled that we shouldn't highlight the text." So you want to remain unspoiled but you want to read spoilers????

Aren't there countries that are whole seasons behind? This means just about anything show related can potentially be a spoiler to someone.

Maybe we should color code it like the Homeland Security terrorist threat. "The following is a category blue spoiler."

I say enter the spoiler zone at your own risk.

abt - Oh! Ok, well,
KAM and i were actually
discussing Smallville initially, then it
kinda warped into a Buffy/Violence/Sex
topic, y'know how it goes...

But while i think to a point it was sorta
helpful for Buffy to get involved with
Spike, their sexual escapades were
taken, IMO, to the extreme,
violence-wise. I don't necessarily
agree that Buffy was suicidal, very
despondent and depressed at being
"back" and Spike helped her (in her
mind) "feel" again, but remember in
Normal Again, after all the Spuffy stuff,
she still prefered to be insane (or
normal, depending on which reality
you believe) than being alive. In the
end though, she chose her friends, the
people who love her, and not just to
"get" something from her, like Spike
was doing, again, my opinion.

abt: I don't think she was suicidal, perhaps that depressed that she was just going through the motions. She would have been happy to die, but I don't class that as the same as suicidal. She was willing to change places with Dawn.

Spike willed her to choose life (OMWF) before any serious 'using' went on... she used him to confide in, yes, but nothing more before that point, so I don't think suicidal!

She was numb and confused but I reckon that was more to do with loss ...not leaving 'heaven' - but the fact that there she said she knew everything was alright. Back again, everything wasn't. She was aware again of the danger, need to fight evil, that she had lost her mom (she said she new Joyce was alright when she was in 'heaven', maybe doubt crept in about afterlife etc. when she came back).

She was tired and numb, unwilling to pick up the strands and soldier on. Everyone expected her to 'get on with life', except Spike who simply listened and made it obvious that he was totally 'into her' as Dawn would say!

Hopefully this is my last week of being helpdesk chic! *g*

I just saw ATS3.19 The Price. Same as in Afterlife and Superstar, some monster thing gets made as the side-effect of dark magic. So I'm wondering if something absolutely huge is going to get made as a side-effect of Willow's use of all the dark magic at the end of s6? She had all the stuff from the Magic Box and Rack.

Hi everyone!!

I'm a newbie to the board. I'm angelparis from Australia. I've been a Buffy fan from the very first episode 5 years ago, and I also love Angel since it started 3 years ago.

My favorite Buffy eps are Passion, Becoming Pt 2, Amends, The Prom, Grad Day Pt 2, Hush, Something Blue, Restless, Fool For Love, The Body, The Gift, OMWF, Tabula Rasa, & Seeing Red. We haven't finished seeing season 3 here yet, so I can't comment on the final 3 episodes of S6.

My favorite Angel eps are IWRY, Somnambulist, 5 x 5, To Shanshu In LA, AYNOHYEB, Dear Boy, Darla, The Trial, Reunion, Reprise, Dead End, There's No Place Like Pltz Glrb, Billy, Lullaby, Birthday, Waiting In The Wings, Loyalty, Sleep Tight, & Forgiving. We've still got 2 episodes to go for S3.

My favorite characters are Angelus (I can't get enough of him), Angel, Spike, Buffy, Cordelia, Xander, & Willow.

Anyhoo, I just thought I'd take the time to introduce myself and say 'hi'. I hope I get to know most of you over time.

It has been pretty hot here this past few days, airless with it, but I suppose it is better than all the rain we have had previously. The weeds were growing so quickly than we had a job to keep up with them LOL
We have some lovely Lilies out now in the pond, and some others, but I am not too sure of their names, which have just come out in the garden. They have big trumpet heads and smell beautiful.

Hello again,

IMMORTAL: Yeah, I saw it, but I will believe it when I see it on screen.

Miko: Yeah, that one was shown, but I didn't miss the blood.
As far as Spuffy--the sex scenes in my opinion didn't approach showing it in a bad light, nor did the audience seem to take it that way. In fact--they actually portrayed what passes for "intimate" conversation, which I believe attempted to portray it as "normal." If the writers were trying to clearly say that Spike and Buffy's relationship was bad, they really need to rethink their portrayals. At the very best it was a mixed bunch of signals.
As far as W/T...well, I wouldn't exactly categorize that as a healthy relationship either. It involves abuse, refusal to deal with the issues surrounding that abuse, as well as an inability to really be honest with each other (basically due to Willow's issues), and finally it was a relationship from day one that had one partner (Willow) in a superior position to the other. While it may be realistic, these things tend to dampen my ability to call it romantic. The same goes for S/B--I saw how Spike attempted (and did) manipulate Buffy. It doesn't seem however that it came across strong enough to the audience, because they were also fed the sex scenes which seemed in general to be portrayed as good for Buffy (if you don't bother to look beyond the micron-thick surface.

KAM - Smallville: that one guy,
coming out of the bowling alley place,
that one made me jump! At that close
of range, with a sawed-off shotgun,
maybe i've seen one too many John
Woo bloodfests, but getting hit that
close i would've expected to see tons
of blood. NOT that i wanna see blood,
but...

Also, regarding the Buffy sex stuff: it
wasn't so much seeing nekkid Spike, it
was the WHOLE Spuffy thing that
made me wretch. But in the context of
the story, i think they tried to show how
wrong the Spuffy stuff was for Buffy, by
making it violent, where as the
Willow/Tara to me was much more
realistic and romantic. And i think in
W/T's storyline it fit better. JMO

white wings The insomnia is continuing, though not as bad....and I don’t seem to miss the sleep, yet!...... I think Bronzing compensates.... sets the old brain buzzing!

Here goes, my comments on your last post:

‘He won’t talk/listen to me.... I know we’ll have sex!’......makes lots of sense.....like, NOT!

Spike was in there! (OMWF).....he left when he realized he was joining in.... she followed him out. He felt she should have stayed.... she wanted to be with him..... I get that!

Quote: Maybe he didn't think "evil" in trying to persuade her to be like him, but from a human perspective, it was evil.

We agree on something!

...and I’m right on WtB.... it get’s better

Quote: I think Buffy would have liked to forget that he was as evil as he was - she would have felt less ashamed.

Hurrah..... we agree again

Quote: But neither did she want him to be good. If he had been, the way she used him would have been scandalous. As it was, they were cruel and hurtful to each other.

BUT if he had been good she wouldn’t have had to call it ‘using him’ she could have admitted she loved him!

Quote:I can see that you feel the way you do, I just think you have bestowed your feelings on an heretofore unworthy object.

He’s wonderful..... and going to get better.... it’s the potential....that ‘tiny glimmer’ that does it..... and James! (she admitted!)

Angelus and Spike are NOT the same....never felt anything for Angelus (Angel, yes), Angelus, No!!

I feel more than pity for Spike...... (some of my feelings are highly suspect *BG* and have taught me a lot about myself.... or rather my ‘shadow self’) and I know we’ll cross swords a lot but how else will I get awarded gold stars?

I know and appreciate your view on dangerous individuals and agree that a balance has to be struck between trying to salvage a ‘broken person’ and the rights and safety of the innocent.

Will’s use of power to wreak revenge should get dealt with but I wonder whether ME will pursue it, S7 is reputed to be more upbeat, less breast beating? I reckon she will have been counselled over the break and be more like the old Willow. Jonathan and Andrew are guilty of being very weak... do you think we’ll hear what became of them?

Hello again,

Miko: Yes, the violence in that episode was high, but also appropriate. Here is the thing about sex vs violence on TV. How often is the actual portrayal of a sex act, or faux-nudity required for the plot? How often is violence in a show about either stopping criminals or demons required? I am not here to advocate one or the other, and I think both can be done much more effectively with the "less is more" method. I am not saying it shouldn't happen--I am saying however that I don't need to see blood flying in order to understand violence is happening. Likewise I don't need to see skin or Spike doing "pushups" to know that characters are having sex. I think both are basically shooting for childish viewers who are easily titllated.
Back to Smallville: I knew there were shotgun blasts, but they were either long camera angles or not directly shown. It wasn't a gratuitous portrayal, yet still very effective. Basically the more blatant a portrayal of sex or violence is the more likely the meaning portrayed is either reduced or was never there in the first place.

driveby before collapsing into bed...
I'm back from Baltimore & Shore Leave, completely knackered....
I had a great time with Oblivia, Halfrek & Mar, it was lovely to meet
them in real life. Not to mention Oblivia's family & pets - all just
wonderful! And Baltimore is a lovely town, I miss it already.

I heartily echo everything the others said about James. Having observed
him closely at the SFX con (OK - watched him like a lust-crazed hawk at
every opportunity......), I already knew he was a complete doll to his fans.
It was nice to see it again at SL. And to hear him sing (finally!) and laugh a
lot (yes, it's a really nice laugh). That short black t-shirt he wore on Sunday
which kept riding up wasn't bad, either.....oh, somebody stop me, I'm too
tired for this! More details will be forthcoming from transcripts and pix
(thanks to Mar and Halfrek) than I could possible recall
now. But there was confirmation that ASH has signed up for ten
episodes next season
. And that Spike really would have
(spoilered just in case) bitten that woman in the alley -
at least, according to James he would have. An opinion which
disappointed a few people......

Halfrek - can't wait to read the transcripts and see the pix!! But I
am dead jealous that you got to meet him again, just after Oblivia
& I left. Still, I suppose even then I would have wanted more, he is
addictive! Btw, in full DMBB mode - I saw that Sera asked if
anyone else had noticed, in a scene with Clem, that James, erm, dresses
to the left....Well, yes, of course I did, I have a rep to live down to after all!
However, as you & I personally observed at SL, in baggy jeans, where
things start out is not necessarily where they end up....(left - no, right - no,
left again...*weg*!)

Mar have a good trip! Thanks again for the DMBBC badges (or
buttons - whatever). That was a good idea. Going the wrong way on the
escalator? Not such a good idea....*g*

DragonFlyze hi. welcome to the beta. in Miko's defense, almost no one has been using the spoiler font for awhile. this because the US and Europe have finished airing the season. i realise that Australia has not so i understand your frustration, but in all fairness, it is not only Miko who's guilty of not using it at this point. i'd say 99.9999% of us don't for past season of BtVS and Angel but are using it for spoilers for upcoming season. also, it's totally up to you, but the majority of people don't use chat speak (or whatever it's called)..ie. ur msg (for your message), u (for you). be sure to check out the Community Rules and FAQ. settle in and jump on in to a conversation.

wolfguard — But Giles had no idea Ben had summoned the Queller demon. He could not have taken that into account. And he stood there over the crippled Ben and had a long conversation with him to justify himself before leaning over and suffocating the poor *******. There was no heat of battle involved at that point. (Add: Allligator, Boromir, KarenT: Giles, level headed? I dunno, but there's nothing more sociopathic in this world than an Englishman of quality convinced he's doing the right thing. They're capable of anything.)

Reyna — There's a model for the kind of "male feminism" we see on BtVS in the interesting Glenbridge book, Male Code: Hawkeye Pierce, the opportunist who uses his 'feminist sympathies' to hike women's heels to the ceiling.

abt, neonate — What season 6? [My eyes! My eyes!)

Fan of the Early Seasons — There are a number of good ways they could use Amber next season. Right now, I'd bet the good money I don't have they miss all of them...

Algerina — refresh my memory; is there a word limit on the contest? I'm working on a piece and it's turning into an excerpt from a novel...

KAM - Yeah, the shotgun murder stuff was pretty brutal, luckily Smallville is on
after 9pm - and that makes me wonder how did Buffy get away with SO MUCH in Season
6 - violence-wise - being on at 8pm?? Specifically the Willow skinning Warren scene - for
the life of me, i can't figure out how UPN could allow that to be shown on an 8pm timeslot.
But, they couldn't show a scene where Willow goes "down" under the covers with Tara? I
remember reading a recent interview with Amber Benson (the Toronto Trek thing she
appeared at last week) where she said that she'd MUCH prefer seeing sex on screen
than all the violence (i'm paraphrasing her, of course.) Maybe that's how Buffy got away
with showing all that Spuffy sexage, they violenced it up. But since Willow/Tara was more
playful/sexy/romantic, they couldn't show as much of it. :(

Back to Smallville, it was still shocking (maybe shocking is too strong a word) to see
people gunned down on a show like Smallville. It was like a sudden dose of reality hitting
the show.

Sorry for my thoughts being fragmented - whuppage and all...

Stellasurya: Perhaps it is the Hindu tradition that makes the difference but Jewish/Christian faith does not have 'deserving people' being better treated by TPTB than the undeserving. You do not 'earn' a place in heaven.... it is a gift, that you are unworthy of.

Vampire tradition has 'unworthy people' becoming vampires, suicides, killers etc.... and the vampires as not deserving anything other than to be dusted. I like Joss' version better. Like you said Angel didn't deserve to be vamped, no one does! Life ain't fair and the I doubt if 'getting to heaven' is a test you pass or fail..... Oops, too many parking tickets, you can't get in!
Heaven for me is not sitting on a cloud with a harp and the idea of a big worship session fills me with horror!..... it is being 'in the moment', so lost from yourself that you are totally immersed in the eternal (see I'm getting towards the big communion with God!).

Self = sin and therefore I'm a BIG sinner. I understand where Spike the unsouled vampire comes from because I have very selfish tendencies. It has taken me a long time to see/admit that! Even when I do 'good' things I can trace 'self' in it. Okay I don't rip people's throats out.... my actions are not 'as evil' but the motivation behind them is just as impure. Angel is not only doing penance but he is being very unselfish..... he gave up the gem of Amara and even Buffy for the better good of the world. I think Spike will be moved towards that, but hopefully will (after a suitable couple of episodes of self loathing, perhaps drowning sorrows?) be Spike with a much bigger 'glimmer' showing through. He will NOT be the Snerk, cannot be.... He'll be more lovely than ever, but I bet the leathers will go and the bleached, slicked back locks. (That will save James such angst!..... and be better for his hair!)..... he might even give up smoking! It won't be 'wave magic wand time', it'll be a struggle and James'll play that well. I'm looking forward to what ME do.....

What is your problem with Buffy? I like the conflict in her.... I don't want her to use her powers like a man.... she is a woman. Feminism is NOT emulating men its doing things in a woman's own way!

Hello again,

HAPPY BIRTHDAY SLAYED SOUL!

Miko: I agree about this episode. It wasn't a slam-bang, action packed wild ride, but I thought it did an excellent job of expanding the foundation of the characters. The kid warns Clark about Lex, but Clark says "I prefer to see the best in people." That is pretty ominous.
The Step-father driver--I can only assume that he killed the other driver, and went from there. I am not sure if the Limo came from Lex's local fleet or from his Father in Metropolis.
As you mentioned, Lana's "not bad" secret about Clark is also hinted at. As far as Lana's cute factor. I think there are two types of people--those who think she is cute to begin with, and those who realize later she is cute. :) Personally--I think she is CGI animated.

Other things in this episode--the murders. They pulled no punches with that--people being shotgunned and such. I was like "Whoa boy!"

Happy Birthday Slayed Soul

Yay gypsyrat!
deadguy : Giles is no longer part of the group, having gone back to England. Tara is no longer part of the group, having -- well -- died. Ditto Joyce. And of course, Riley went off and rejoined the military and got hisself hitched. That doesn't leave us with a whole lot of level heads in the group. (I'm ignoring Graham's flat-top hair cut because he's also no longer in the group.) But if I have to choose the most level-headed, I'm going to go with Xander. Other than his stupidly cancelling his wedding to Anya and making her deal with the aftermath, he's been by-and-large sensible lately.

Ojagwers : Oh, where to begin? Did Dru choose Angelus and his still beating heart of a quaint little shopgirl because he was more brutal and torturous or because he could actually walk, unlike rollerboy? Also, you completely ignore the fact that during that same season 2, Spike chose Dru.
Dru isn't at all unique. See Darla in season one's Angel : "You're hurting me ... That's good, too." Vampires, being demons, enjoy brutality and consider it foreplay (when practiced amongst themselves).

Lazy Girl : But does that mean that you want a dip?

Stellasurya : I'm not a shipper of any kind. I did enjoy Willow/Tara and Anya/Xander, but each time I knew that it was only a matter of time before the relationship blew up in their faces.
Buffy has jumped from relationship to relationship to relationship. In the second half of season 5, she supposedly decided to go it alone for a while, to sit back and just be Buffy and that was the wisest relationship decision she's ever made. It's just too bad it didn't last. I have this sneaking suspicion that the writers don't know how to write a single independent woman.

"Would you be interested in playing Fantasy Buffy and Fantasy Angel (like Fantasy Survivor and Fantasy Football or Baseball) this season?"
I think my Angel Fantasy would violate this site's terms of service. *g*

My fave shot of last season..other than ones from the musical…is in then Groundhog Day episode..where things happen over and over and Buffy looses it and stamps on Giles’ glasses!! I laughed like mad!! Also loved Giles kissing Anya and a few of the Spike/Buffy bits in the birthday party epp! (Bad with names ..sorry)

Season 7 Spoiler * They probably have the whole summer to collect background and location shots I imagine but should think all the stuff with the actors has been done by now. But then I know nothing about how TV filming works. London weather hasn’t been great but I think the west country has been ok. Still dying to know where thy filmed. Hope the Dorset coast and some of the Arthurian sites. Although they are meant to be in Devon aren’t they?*

Your CD sounds like fun listening! Trying to remember famous numbers ones and only Ultravox - Vienna comes to mind!!

Stellasurya: Worthy?….. you make it sound like an insult! LOL!

Yes I know he already has empathy but he doesn't use it for those he doesn't care about….. in fact he uses it against people (Yoko factor). This is because he is evil. If I'm right about being re-souled making him reconsider his ways he will not be able to do that any more. This then makes him self-sacrificing. He will feel the need to be less selfish…… that doesn’t mean wet!

You and I have posted widely on the fact that he showed glimmers of such selfless behavior….. and you think that adopting that behavior more would make him dull, wet? No way! I like bad-boy Spike only because he has these glimmers. He would be a complete ***** hole without it! He has hidden depths and I love him for that, that allows me to put up with the 'Snark'….. I think that is how Buffy feels. I like the leather and wit….. no problem with that! Handcuffs?…. erm!…. my shadow self says Yay! But I'm still holding out on that one!…… Tell-it-like-it-is won't change…… he's a T not F (but he will be more thoughtful in it).. Hot? How could James play anything else? ;)

Reyna: Sure between mutually consenting adults, rough sex occasionally, that’s fine, as is role play..... but what they had was unhealthy..... not connecting spiritually, only physically. As soon as she started to feel comfortable with him they looked as if they were gentler together (she didn't need the 'rush' to blot out what she was doing, it felt good)..... then if he reminded her they were developing into an 'us' .....doubt took over, fear and WHAM!.... violence again!

Yes, she likes a little monster in her man..... don’t we all? BUT a ‘little’ not a ‘lot’. She comments that he isn’t getting any gentler as if she wishes he was....... her fault, needs to tell him, gave wrong lead!
I don’t go in much for ‘quickies’, prefer marathons, but for a male to manage that he has to have stamina (and with a family, the opportunity!) and a girl requires skill, imagination and patience (although I do get the impression that might not be as true with a vampire! *BG*).... Buffy’s ‘stamina’ probably implied that she prefers a longer session too..... she’s not into ‘wham, bam, thank-you ma’am’.....but I don’t think we have evidence that Xander would be either……… Anya seems to indicate that he is a proficient, caring lover and far from boring!

BTW You do make ‘marital bliss’ sound mundane.... but we know it hasn’t got to be! ...................and why has that got to be the 'only option' within marriage?..... your imagination doesn’t have to die when you take vows!

Good Morning Bronzers.

It's going to be a hot one here in the east today. Blech!

YAY! gypsyrat!

Happy Birthday: Old One's Oldest and Slayed Soul!!

deadguy's QOD: Well, I think Anya often looks at the situation more rationally than the rest of the gang. Except, of course, when she's seeking vengeance on an unsuspecting Xander. Giles would be my other choice. I think the show suffered from the loss of Giles' presence. Sometimes you just need a real adult around. The voice of reason, so to speak.

Y_slaybelle: Yesterday it was "The Goldberg Variation". I'm going to miss "Sein...Can't remember how to spell it." on Friday, because I'll be heading to SJBW3. "Closure" should be on Monday, though. I think I should start trying to prepare myself emotionally now. *g*

Yay Gypsyrat!!!

KAM - Latest Smallville observations: Another good ep Tuesday, a nice change
from the "monster of the week" theme, this time, sort of (to me, at least) a "What if Clark
had been found by some unscrupulous parents, and not the Kents" he might have been
put in the same position as that little boy, using his powers for their personal gain.

Liked the romantic "tension" between Chloe and Clark, neat little clues regarding Lana's
feelings towards Clark, some ominous comments regarding Lex and his hidden "dark"
side - i really liked the actor who played the young boy who could read minds, he was
cast very well.

Minor quibble: How did the "bad" step-father get a job being Lex's chauffeur so quickly? I
would think Lex being as important and powerful as he is would have some kind of
security screening process, or background check regarding his drivers. I know, they
might have us assume that Lex just uses a service to drive him around, but i would think
he would have a full-time driver at his beck and call - your thoughts?

And does Lana get cuter everytime i see her, or is it just me? *g*

Lil Pia - I'll be sure to check out your new comic coming out - always enjoy
seeing your work!

General Board Comment: It is getting more difficult to just pop in and lurk here,
seeing more and more possible "spoilers" leaking through. Please be kind to those of us
who wish to remain un-spoiled for Season 7 - PLEASE USE SPOILER FONTS when
posting possible spoilery stuff - Thank You. :)

...i'll be lurking...

“Who cares?” This says a lot about how Willow sees Xander now, and his attitudes toward education and life.

Or, valMichael, it could say a lot about how Willow fears she has nothing but her "research skills" to bring to the scooby mix. The dream was, after all, Willow's dream. Chock full of Willow's insecurities. Don't go tarring Xander with Willow's lack of self-worth!
The boy's got enough problems of his own!

Happy Birthday OldOnes Oldest!!

deadguy
It was always Giles……except when he had his Ripper moments *swoon*

abt
Fried eggs are delicious ..but very bad for you! I was evil and cooked sausages last night..but I did grill them! And like the thought of improved dentistry causing weight gain LOL....I'm looking in to suing my dentist first thing in the morning !! Space Oddity = great song & album!

aligator
I’ve been thinking of Apple Crumble and custard all day! Cant decide which one to have hot though…cos one thing must be hot and one cold…I’m weird like that!

Boromir
Surely you cant be implying that Trinagle wasn’t actually the glamorous jetferry setting British equivalent of Dynasty that the BBC worked so hard to make it!? I watched it ‘cos I fancied that guy that was in it who had been the kid in Omen III! Bad soaps are a thing of mine, did you see Eldorado? Although the US ones are the best….Sunset Beach was a masterpiece…even better than Acorn Antiques!!

Jitsudude
Once more My Lords kindly words have gladened my heart and improved my day. I have much to do before sunset and must make haste and follow thy example for knowing thou dost sit hard at thy desk hast inspired me ;o)

Hey - no blasting of the PBFP hotel. We had enough firemen last time.
Sure, the female members of the party may have been impressed with being surrounded by men in uniform, but they didnt have the bills for the damages ;)

Gordy
Wait till you come to one of the smaller parties. Me and MapB couldnt feel our faces after all the rum cocktails.

Toni
Me?? Say something that might be considered sarcastic? I'd never do anything like that. I always say nice things *nods*

Yay Gypsy Rat!!!

Happy Birthday to:
Old One's Oldest & Slayed Soul !!

DeadGuy
Now that Tara is dead it has to be Giles

Morella
You should set up a quiz for your family to see if they can find things in the kitchen. *g* We are all fine here. Hot but fine.

Ojagwers
I feel like you and I are beating a dead horse or at least a dead vampire. I meant that if in his frustration he lost his control and vamped out it would be even more motivation for him to leave. It would not require Buffy slaying him. She is the only human he can hurt.

OldManFan
Are we in competition? Not us. Not the Queen and King of Trivia.

ValMichael
Just check OldManFan's answers he always gets Morella's quizzes all right

Once more into the breach, with feeling:

1. In which episode did Angel perform “Tai chi Ch’uan”?
?
2. In “When she was Bad” where did Cordy say she actually spent her summer and where had her parents promised to take her?
I think she was promised some place like the Riveira, but maybe she had to stay in Sunnydale?
3. How many churches are there in Sunnydale?
Not enough, by God. But there is one Starbucks
4. Name who said the following, which episode, and the words that have been replaced by “pants”
“This happened before, pants. That pants I had about the pants ... It came true.
dammit, dream, breaking dish?
5. What is Joyce and Buffy’s home address?
I remember her saying this in The Body, but I can't remember what it was.
6. What did Spike say Killing is to a Vampire, Killing is a Vampire's?
only way of getting a date?
7. What color is Ox's hair in Bewitched Bothered and Bewildered?
Black?
8. Who was Tom and what was his year and major?
?
9. What superhero did Buffy like to dress up as when a little girl?
Wonder Woman?
10. What is the name of the restaurant where Buffy once was a waitress?
?

A trivial pursuit, indeed.

Beldin Great post!. Like everyone else that didn‘t come in at the beginning, it took me a couple of weeks to get up the nerve to post, and I jumped into an argument with kirbyclause and someone else. Talking about jumping into the fire and missing the frying pan!

Xander I’m re-watching Restless and just now Willow’s dream was finished. In the scene in the class room where Willow is giving the book report, Xander yells out “Who cares?” This says a lot about how Willow sees Xander now, and his attitudes toward education and life.

Hey !
The only thing that I can think of where Giles would be less than level headed is when he heads off in pursuit of an answer, only to realise he’s spent ages looking for the wrong thing when some other piece of information comes to light. A case of too much knowledge being a bad thing …. ?
However, your comment regarding Anya’s confusion over ‘human’ matters, IMO, just adds weight to the ‘for’ side of her being level headed. She doesn’t understand fully the complexity of human emotions, or how to show them and therefore reacts with the most basic of responses – making her appear ignorant and maybe even cold-hearted (??)

Morella ~
Hey ! :o) {waves}

Vaal ~
LOL – my non lack of a job (fortunately ?) is my problem. There’s been all sorts going on here over the last year or so, resulting in a distinct lack of quality Bronzing time …… that and lack of a PC at home ….. *G*
But it’s starting to sort itself out a bit now, so maybe that’ll give me a bit more time – however, you never know – it could all go t*ts up at any time …..

(Rachel voice) How can I thank you, you mysterious black-clad hunk of a night- thing?
(Angel voice) No need, little lady - your tears of gratitude are enough for me. You see, I was once a bad-@$$ vampire, but love and a pesky curse defanged me. Now I'm just a fluffy puppy with bad teeth. No, not the hair! Never the hair!
(Rachel voice) But there must be some way I can show my appreciation?
(Angel voice) No, helping those in need's my job, and working up a load of sexual tension and prancing away like a magnificent p00f is truly thanks enough.
(Rachel voice) I understand. I have a nephew who's gay, so...

OldManFan's Buffy-related Trivia Quiz - trivia about cultural references made in BtVS episodes
1 point for the answer, 1 point for the episode it was in

1. Who is St. Crispin the patron saint of? Patron Saint of Shoemakes and Cobblers, was the episode the one in Season Five when they all head off to the desert? I cannot think of the name
2. What compnay produces Giga Pets? Tiger Electronics
3. What's the generic term for the kind of movie Xander was making fun of when he said "I'm from the country of Leone? westerns, possibly “spaghetti” westerns? I think the episode was “Inca Mummy” or something like that with Ampata in it.
4. The year Dorothy Hamill won an Olympic gold medal, which US female skater won two medals? Bonnie Blair won 2 in 1994, but in 1976 when Dorothy Hamill one an Olympic gold medla, Shelia Young one 3, gold, silver and bronze for speed skating, I don’t know the 2 though. I think the episode was “What’s My Line Part 1”
5. Burt Reynolds was nominated for an Academy Award for what movie? no idea

from today

deadguy
re QOD Well as it stands now, I really do not know, Giles would be my first choice, but he is no longer a full time member of the gang, and Tara would he my second choice, but she is no longer around. IMO it is hard to choose a level head amongst them now.

Boromir, KarenT - hey! I'll confess that Anya is second on my list of level headed Scoobies... but then her confusion over 'human' matters struck me. I always remember her reaction to Joyce's death, and some of the shorter moments of her conversations with Xander... she was all set to run away from the Acension, then all set to stay behind if Xander didn't come too... I wondered if you could explain some reasons why Giles would be less level-headed too...?

sts - *waves* How was the 'going out with that guy' thing... or was it too long ago...? Or shouldn't I ask...? :)

Yay, gypsyrat!

deadguy - Hi there. Look at me, I'm here at a time to answer one of your questions. "Most" being a relative term, I'd have to say Giles. Assuming he's still considered part of the group.

On July 1, 1998 I did a Yahoo! internet search for "Buffy the Vampire Slayer". Browsing through the results I came to the Official WB BtVS website. There were things there that didn't really interest me but my attention was caught and held by a place called The Bronze. It took me a minute or two to figure out that I should read this thing from the bottom up and when I did I found that people were having conversations about this great show I had discovered. It had a week's worth of archived boards and I went back all the way to the "beginning" and started to read. It was fascinating. These people (at least most of them) were talking about things in this show I hadn't even thought to look for. Those who weren't talking about the show were saying "Hi" and having conversations that showed they considered themselves friends. (And two of them were having a sound effects war.) I read every post until I had to stop to go to bed. When I got home from work the next day I started where I left off and continued reading. I didn't get much else accomplished the next few days. A time or two I'd think to say "that's right!" or "that's wrong" but then I'd remember that these people had already had that conversation and gone on. I continued to read and watch to learn the ins and outs of the board. Then one day I hit "Refresh" and the screen showed me the same thing I had just read. I had caught up. No more hours of reading. I had to wait for new posts. Maybe it was time I posted myself and let them know I was here? What do I call myself? Not being clever at thinking up names I decided to borrow one from a favorite story. "Belgarion" was the main character but "Beldin" was easier to type. Besides, I liked him. So on July 17th I made my first post. I didn't say much, just that I had read a neat article about BtVS on the Viewers For Quality Television site and I posted a link to it. Such a short, unaddressed post. Would anyone notice? Someone noticed. The wonderful EverDawn and the equally wonderful Jubilee both responded to my post and made me welcome. And I continued to be welcome there until the site shut down. Then I migrated here where the welcome continues though some of the names have changed. Now, four years after my first post, I'm leaving in just a few minutes to start a road trip that will culminate in seeing, again and for the first time, 40 or 50 people who are representative of the friends I have found. I just wanted to say thanks before I left. It's been a grand four years.

P.S for the SJBW3 people: If you don't see me Friday send the search dogs (Peanut and Reesie) to make sure I didn't end up in Florida somewhere. ;-)

Tana - *SMOOCH!!!*
Keywe - *SMOOCH!!!

Gone now.

YAY gypsyrat! *smooch*

deadguy
: Definitely Giles.

Blade: {{Hugs}} and *smoochies* Okay, so how's this: I have told a couple of people (no names) in the past few days that you were a "maybe" for the NYC PBFP and they showed the *exact same* disbelief that your sister did! Am I the ONLY one of our friends who still has faith in you?!?! Are you going to disappoint your sole remaining true believer? Am I laying it on too thick? Let me hear an "Amen!" *g*

Reasons #10 and 9 why Blade should attend the NYC PBFP:

10) Last hurrah before "family responsibilities" set in!

9) The oh-so-important ability to still surprise people! :-D

Grifter: *Smooch* See, I knew if I waited long enough to write back to you, I'd have a story to tell! Will try to get to email today and tell it. And NO, it is not about what you are thinking it's about! That story is long over! *g*

Happy: {{Hugs}} YAY! Only a few more days! We decided not to send the kids to camp at all on Friday so we could leave earlier and take our time getting down there. We will still arrive at the hotel in time to swim and shower before dinner... but hey! Aren't you guys getting in Saturday anyway?!!? Why am I telling you all this then!??! ;-) Seriously, I cannot WAIT! And the NYC party is going to be a blast as well- WOO AND HOO!

The Quote Game

The rules to this game are simple. Monday through Friday I will post a new quote from Buffy the Vampire Slayer on the Bronze posting board. The game will not be played on Saturday or Sunday. I will post the quote during the indicated board time located on the posting times. Your task is then to fill out the form located here and click the 'enter' button. The first Bronzer to get it right will be declared winner! All the other Bronzers who get it right, but are not first will still be posted on the winners list for that day. Do not worry; I will never post any quote that would result in a spoiler! I will not take answers from the board because posting your answer on the board would give your answer to other Bronzers. Please use the form to send your answer. This game is a great way to test your Buffy knowledge! If the quote would happen to go unanswered, the quote would be considered a "dropped quote" and will be fed to my dingo, Umbra.

The Quote:

Number: 401

"A Slayer hunts vampires; Buffy is the Slayer; don't tell anyone. I think that's all the vampire information you need."

deadguy - Giles? Despite his fondness for Buffy and Dawn, I can't imagine him losing it entirely.

abt - *g* sounds like you're having a good day! Are we supposed to judge Willow for trying to help Dawn...? She may have meant well, she may not have truly understood the dangers involved, either because of her own experience or because her research had concentrated in other areas...? It's an interesting question... does ignorance make you morally weak?

S2K - I got all confused over who was emailing / phoning me to arrange what last night... Did I say that the guy I was supposed to meet on the 1st has confirmed? *pouts*

Oh, a thought! I must post it at once.....

American stereotype - fat.
British stereotype - bad teeth.

But! British dental treatment improving, and Britons getting fatter.

What if? Good American teeth lead to fatness, because better at munching? Bad British teeth act as a weightloss aid?

Morning Bronzers,

Jocasta - Well, I'll let you have your head on Angel and Spike, it sounds...worthy if a little dull. Especially the thought that Spike in Season 7 should be 'self-sacrificing'! (he has empathy already). OH NO! please Joss no! I want Snark, Wit, Bad-boy, Tell-it-like-it-is, Leather! Handcuffs, Poseur, HOT! Spike! Not a wet William who still doesn't feel he's good enough for Buffy - (ick), as if!!! (see Reyna on the pre-disposition of Buffy for kink!)

Reyna - Oh Lord! I love your deconstruction of the so-called 'feminism' in BtVS. LOL!
Is there a point? Good point!
I feel much the same way in that this season lost the plot (mainly because there was no resolution at the end to all that flipping angst). But if the point is to show that a cute (very tiny) woman can kick arse with the best of them - showing her as a deeply objectionable human being who manages to avoid any self-honesty rather obviates any enjoyment in female emancipation! I find myself yelling at the screen - "bloody take that slayer-power away from her for pity's sake and give it to someone who could handle it rather better, like a bloke!"
Oooppps! Sorry Sistahs! Perhaps that is just proof that gender-conditioning runs very deep - in me as well as in ME! *g*

But it's almost like coherence of theme is considered bad for story-lines, Tara/Willow fans have made much of this, especially pointing out that the gay relationship they adored must be sacrificed for The Story, but the DMP must be sacrificed for the sake of advertising revenue. What is feminism sacrificed for? Bigger viewing numbers amongst the male population as was implied on the Succubus Club by (I think) Jane Espenson...mmmm?

EDIT: ojagwers - Nope, sorry! All the instances you cite are not EVIL, bad yes..influenced by evil - yes, in as much as any other thief or thug or gambler is guided by a Dark Star, but not plain EVIL. Stealing from the Magic Box? Tut! Better stake Dawn then!

Stella.

Sarah's Carl - I was watching Rikki (howdy *g*) on Monday night and the episode was about Vampires. It’s even classified as a real religion (not rikki - vampirism). The things they do are quite disturbing too. There of course is the whole sleeping in coffins, wearing black but they have to eat raw meat, they inject and drink blood there is a lot more but it is a family board.

Yay Boromir!

Hello Rileyx3[/g], good to meet you (virtually speaking) ...

Stellasurya, as folks on this board may have noticed, I'm a big ol' Spike fan, but ... he hasn't done any evil in Season 6? Okay, Big Evil -- the woman in the alley (this is not a test, repeat, this is not a test), the demon eggs (hazardous to *somebody's* health) and, of course, the bathroom (that's not vamp evil and not premeditated evil, but boy, it's still evil). Little Evil -- smoking while Giles is almost killed in "Bargaining" (yeah, it's a good joke, it's in character for Spike, but Giles *does* think he's dying and that he was an idiot to trust Spike, who's watching him die ...), cheating at cards in "Life Serial," stealing from the Magic Box and therefore Anya (who Spike actually has friendly feelings for) in "All the Way," leaving Buffy to fight the loan shark's minions in "Tabula Rasa," failing to pay debt, same episode -- although I'm all in favor of not paying kitten debts, so I'll waive this one -- the eggs again (while telling the truth would have been awkward, his beloved Buffy is very worked up about finding these things -- not nice not to tell her), dumping Katrina's body (great, she disappears -- her family is not only heartbroken but freaked out forever). And I'm sure I'm forgetting a few. Spike has also had moments of being very *good* -- the two don't cancel each other out.

abt, about Anya getting her ring when the world doesn't end, she has the ring by the beginning of Season 6, Xander just doesn't want her to wear it. In fact, the world *didn't* end -- Buffy died to save it and, indeed, it is for the moment saved.

I think Willow is trustworthy if she *says* she's trustworthy. Nobody ever had a problem with Willow outright lying -- her problem seemed to be in over/misuse of magic. I suspect -- S7 spoilery speculation * Giles will have cured her of that by next season.* But she tends to do what she says she'll do. As someone else pointed out, it's easy to tell if she's good or bad by her mood :)

Leather Jacket, I know this gets discussed periodically, but the "tie her up and torture her" business with Dru is really unique. Given a choice between S2 Spike -- who brings jewelry -- and Angelus -- who brings bloody hearts, killed everybody Dru knew and tortured her, Dru chooses Angelus. Before Spike is even "made," Dru's complaint to Angelus and Darla is "you won't even hurt me." She is nostalgic about Spike with a branding iron in Paris. Given what we know of Dru's siring and Angelus, this is what Dru was like before Spike came into the picture -- she really *would* be more inclined to view Spike as more properly vampy if he tied her up and tortured her. (Let's not forget, Dru's chief reason for leaving Spike to begin with was that he teamed up with the Slayer and wouldn't kill her, not vampy at all of him.) Spike doesn't seem dismayed by this course of behavior, but -- and I wouldn't argue this if we were talking about anybody *except* Dru -- this doesn't seem to be just one of Spike's bright ideas about courtship, but rather the action appropriate to the person being courted.

I have checked the transcript *and* the shooting script for the China flashback in "Fool For Love." Shooting script: "He [Spike] sinks his teeth into her neck ... she's getting sucked dry." The transcript describes this action. So Spike has definitely tasted Slayer blood.

Lucille, I think that bringing Buffy back wasn't a hard sell for Willow. All her friends loved her (well, Willow and Xander more than maybe Anya), none of them knew what consequences there might be from the spell, none of them had reason to believe they were harming Buffy and, once it was put to them that Buffy could be brought back, I think it looked like a very small line between leaving her dead and killing her. "She died to save you and you're willing to risk *nothing* to save her?" Of course Xander and Tara would be in, and Anya wouldn't leave Xander in jeopardy. There's a lot to play on there, emotionally.

However, within 24 hours of Willow apologizing for messing with Tara's mind, swearing she doesn't need magic, having Willow mess with *everyone's* minds puts her for the time being beyond credibility. Willow also had to stop doing magic for her own reasons, *not* just to please Tara, or it would fail. (Sort of like ...)

Speaking of which, to be fair to Buffy, she can't have a longterm relationship with someone who makes himself into what she wants him to be, because then she's got the strain (even if it's not articulated) of the fact that what she approves of about her partner is just a show (unless she gets really, really excited about good acting). So Spike on good behavior couldn't cut it in the long run, not because he doesn't sincerely want Buffy, but because he doesn't sincerely feel he cares if other people live or die, and she looks for that concern in a partner, there's a big problem.

Actually, I think Willow and Oz *were* fairly resolved at the end of Season 3, in terms of being a viable couple. Oz forgave Willow for the Xander smootchies, Oz and Willow go to bed, they are totally okay for the now, which is the best it gets in Sunnydale.

Algerina, I think the attempted rape was plenty of reason for Buffy not to trust Spike and for Spike to decide he needed to change. An actual vamp-out would probably require Buffy to *kill* Spike.

Also, while Spike is being an idiot, blind, oblivious to the current reality of the other person in the situation and *attempting rape* (emphasis for doing something incredibly horrible), he at least has some basis in experience when stating (however hysterically and badly timed), "You love it when I'm inside you." He is not talking about his teeth inside her neck here. He has evidence that Buffy enjoys sex with him; he has *no* evidence that Buffy will remember how much she likes him if he just bites her. While he is out of control, he still has *some* fragile connection to reality ...

Falco,, yeah, I liked watching the Peter Wimsey miniseries a few years back. Actually, liked it better as a miniseries than as a book ...

Okay, direly exhausted, goodnight all!

Ojagwers

peek, foop

Genevieve's Lucie "Kill Switch" is on X-Files tonight! Of the "Twilight Time" song. I plan to tape it, I never did before and I think I want my own copy... *g*

News reports are going wild with Buffy season 7 casting... am almost afraid to hope... the names they're tossing around are too good. If it's all true, then I'm wondering if they're treating this as the last season. Lots of big gun pulling.

slayerdaddy - I rambled, I posted it.

I don’t see BtVS as being especially feminist by any standards. The creators would like to tell us it’s feminist, but as far as statements go, it’s right up there with, “you ladies are so clever with your cookie-making; us men would never be able to make cookies this good ”. Appearances first - the actresses are specifically chosen to look immature, very tiny, very dainty and feminine. Charisma started to mature, she was shipped off. When the rest got to legal age, they bring in a fifteen year old and take promo shots of her in tight leather pants to make sure nobody thinks this is a show about old fat women. Yeah, women have a right to look sexy if they want to, yadda yadda, and it’s all eye candy, and Spike, too, I agree. Still, these aren’t real people, these are characters created for a specific image, which is not, “I am a woman person,” but rather, “I am jail bait for you to fantasize over”.

As for the arcs, I’d agree that the first year was strong. Buffy begins to grow up/defeats The Master, and his ‘family’ of followers/ overcomes a patriarchal authority figure. The Angel arc is a little iffy. She had sex with some guy who turned nasty once he’d scored. She should have staked/got over him. He hangs around, she’s insecure and apologetic, he hurts (well, kills, actually, but I’m not sure where I am with my metaphors) people she cares about. She muddles through, not perfect, but that’s okay, she doesn’t have to be. She’s smart, sexy, funny, and a few other things that are not so good. She gets through the next few seasons one way or another, I’m too tired to dissect them, and you probably don’t want to encourage me.

By season six I’m lost. She has sex without love and we’re told repeatedly that this is bad, bad, bad. To emphasize the point that it’s bad they make it kinky sex. Bad, Buffy, bad. Buffy sure ain’t right in the head. But it’s okay, we’ll straighten her up by having a government/military representative/external force drop in out of the blue and give her a pep talk, rather than having her work it through with elements already in the arc.

Meanwhile, Willow, whom I liked in season one, moved from computers to witchcraft, probably to give her a sassier image. The intelligent Willow demonstrated her delicacy, and got on my nerves, by overdoing her lithpy baby talk. Minor thing, but it serves to remind us that women aren’t to be confused with grown-ups. Anyway, witchcraft, magic = woman power, life force, blood, moon, womb.…or not. Turns out it’s harmful and addictive. Or, something is, I’m not clear on what. She abuses her lover. Nobody’s perfect. Then her lover comes back, which might have been okay; not everybody holds a grudge until hell freezes over. Except it was for the purpose of some hot lesbian sex and to position the lesbian in the bedroom so they could have a sensational lesbian death scene. Then the witch flies off the handle and tries to destroy the world. What’s that all about, metaphorically? The dark side of rampaging women? Maybe, but I’d expect something for balance here. Something is destroyed so that something else can grow, or like that. This seemed to say nothing more than that women who become powerful are insane and must be controlled.

Left without adult supervision, Dawn is whiny on the one hand; a calculating shop-lifter and robber of old men on the other. Anya comes off as likeable, within the strictures of her character she’s honorable. Unfortunately that doesn’t mean anyone likes her, and she’s played for comic relief. Xander, the weasel, who should have been smacked across the head several times for his put-downs, comes away from the season looking like a hero.
Joyce never interested me, she was there because Buffy needed a parent in the background and she was written alternately as clueless, and cloying. I liked Cordelia, she did what she had to do and mouthed off while doing it.

I forget what your point was, questioning whether the show has feminist values just because it says it does? I’d say, not especially. Sexy women who kick booty have been a staple of entertainment long before this, as I’m sure you’re aware. :) I’d look for the female characters to have some control over their lives, rather than having things done to them (serving as victims), but the writers keep doing them in. Buffy’s been hit by so much bad luck that thinking about her is depressing, she’s like a down on their luck friend that you wish would just go away in case it’s contagious. Willow needs permanent containment. Dawn is not likeable and I don’t care how sexy they dress her. Anya’s lost her humanity. Joyce is dead. Tara is dead. They may pull some of this out of its nose dive but it’s all a tad manipulative.

Jocasta - Nah. Don’t agree. I don’t believe the rough stuff was an aberration Buffy would never want again. Parker had implied (can’t remember the exact words) that she had a lot of...hmm...stamina? I believe that Riley didn’t want to get the chip that was super-speeding but killing him removed, not just because it made him more efficient as a fighter, but because (I suspect) he was afraid its removal would make him less of a match for her sexually. Even if some of that isn’t die-hard proof, it’s been hinted at that she’s….more than normal. The ’she needs a little monster in her man’, was said before the Spuffy stuff came up, and I think it was written in because it’s true. I think she felt more free to act on her desires with Spike, she didn’t have to worry about scaring him off and didn’t care if she did. If she somehow wound up married to him I suppose they’d get into the tender ‘kiss kiss, roll on, roll off, snore’ stuff, which we should reassure the unmarrieds is more romantic than it sounds. :) But I don’t think she’d want that as her only option, which would be the case if she married Xander.

NO!

Spoilers are teasing the return of ***Amber Benson*** next season and I would really not like to see that happen. In any form.
